Bartholomew Bats!

Our school is located in Round Rock, Texas which is near Austin. Austin and Round Rock both have huge populations of Mexican Free Tailed Bats that live under our bridges. A colony of bats lives beneath the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin and in Round Rock, another colony resides under the Interstate 35 bridge over McNeil Road. Each evening from March to about October, the bats fly out from beneath the bridge and search for insects to eat. The emergence of the bats is a wonder to watch. We are also thankful that all these millions of bats eat the bugs by our homes.

Our class mascot is the Bat to honor the mammals that live so close to us and help us. (also because Bat and Bartholomew both start with the letter B!) The bats in Central Texas live together in a group and help take care of the young. Then they migrate together as a team. Our class will also live together in our classroom, work together as a team, and help each other out. We are the Bartholomew Bats!

Newsletter-January 31

Hi,

It is hard to believe that February is here already! This year is moving quickly.

On Friday, we had a wonderful visit with our pen pals. Mrs. Arnold invited us to work with her on the district's Empty Bowl Project. An art teacher in the district received a service learning grant to make ceramic bowls, then sell them with food inside donated from local restaurants and use the money to help the Round Rock Serving Center. A customer pays $10 for the soup or food and the handmade bowl and then keeps the bowl. The Empty Bowl Event will be happening in early April and I will let you know about the details when they are finalized. The children and our pen pals had a fantastic time using clay to create these beautiful bowls. Every child and pen pal made a bowl and all of the bowls are magnificent! The bowls will dry for about two weeks then Mrs. Arnold will fire them in her kiln. Everyone will glaze their bowls during our pen pal visit to FCE in March. We will be traveling to The Court to see our pen pals again on the morning of Valentine's Day. It will surely be a LOVE-ly trip. :)

Reading-Many of us started some independent research projects this week. Each child will come up with a topic and some questions that they want answered about that topic. We will be finding books in the library as well as using RRISD approved kid-friendly search engines to gather information. We will be learning about bibliographies and plagerism as well. The information learned by the student will be compiled into a project. The child will choose the type of project. These independent research projects will be ongoing. Some students may do several throughout the year. Others may do only one or two. The children will work at their own pace.

We also began reading biographies in small groups. We tried a technique that I read about in an article in The New York Times about "retrieval testing".

Here is the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/science/21memory.html

The article talked about a study during which groups of college students were asked to read a scientific passage then were divided into 4 groups-1 group just read the article once for 5 minutes, 1 group studied the article in four consecutive five minute sessions. A third group read the article and looked back to the article to make a concept map of information learned. The last group read the article then wrote in essay format everything they could remember about the article (retrieval testing). They then reread the article and again engaged in retrieval testing. All of the students were given a test two weeks later and the retrieval testing group out performed the others.

We are in the process of trying this with some of our groups in class. They read a few pages of their biography then wrote as much as they could remember from the pages read. Then reread the pages and added to their first essay. We will continue trying this strategy for the rest of these books then the students will take a short test on their book. Two weeks later we will be take the test again and see if we remember. It will be interesting to see what we discover in two weeks! If it seems effective, we may try this strategy more often!

Writing: Most of us finished up our personal narratives and are beginning to gather entries and ideas for our next piece.

Math: We will be finishing up decimals and fractions (although we will keep coming back to these concepts all year.) At the end of this week/beginning of next week we will begin geometry.

Science: This week we learned about renewable and nonrenewable resources. We also began our science project presentations. They will continue this week.

Science Night, Math Night, and Book Fair-Friday, February 4 at FCE-Come and join the fun. See all the creative science projects as well.

Newsletter-January 21, 2011

Hi,

We worked hard this week on our writing benchmark and learning about theTexas Revolution. Our four day week was quite full!

Reading-We read more about the Texas Revolution and read multiple biographies of Sam Houston and Lorenzo de Zavala to gather information and confirm facts. We then created venn diagrams to compare and contrast these the lives of these two Texas heroes. We also worked on vocabulary words by acting out words like exoskeleton and metamorphosis. We will read some author biographies next week and look for influences from the author's life in his/her books.

Writing-We are still finishing up our personal narratives and are working very hard on them. The benchmark set us back a little but we are working on revising by adding more details, adding our beliefs and ideas about the experiences, and making sure that we are telling the story in an exciting way. (building up the setting, characters, and events slowly climbing the mountain up to the climax or most important part of the story then reflecting on the story and the resolution) We will be finishing up the rough draft of this piece then start on another personal narrative. We will decide which of these two drafts to publish.

Math-We are still plugging away at fractions, decimals, problem solving, multiplication of larger numbers, and subtraction with regrouping.

Social Studies-The Texas Revolution test was today. I haven't graded them yet but will this weekend. We are taking a break from social studies and doing more science this week.

Our pen pals are coming to FCE on Friday at about 10:00ish. We will be going to Mrs. Arnold's art room and making clay bowls together. The bowls will be fired and then we will glaze them. These bowls will be part of a service project to gather money for people who are homeless and/or hungry. Mrs. Arnold is working with other art teachers in the district to make these bowls and restaurants will be donating soup. Then people can purchase the soup and keep the bowl at a benefit in April or May. The proceeds go to those in need. We are so happy to be able to involve our pen pals in this wonderful project!

Don't Forget!!!!! Mrs. Peterson and I are organizing a Writing Club that will be held on every other Thursday afterschool from 2:45-4:00. (Students will need to provide their own transportation) It will be open to students from second grade to fifth grade. We will have a mini-lesson and then the children will write. They can work on writing that they are doing in class or they can work on their own writing. Teachers will be there to conference individually with students about their writing. Then we will have a sharing time during which students may share some of the writing that they have been working on. We will be starting on Thursday, January 27. Let me know if your child may be interested. It is going to be AWESOME! I am so excited to be a part of it!

Newsletter-Happy MLK Day!

Hi,

We were disappointed on Friday that we were unable to meet with our pen pals but will reschedule as soon as possible. I will let you know details when I have them.

Reading and Social Studies-Last week we read about Japanese Internment Camps during WWII and will continue studying them this coming week. We also used reading strategies to take notes as we read our SS textbook and learned about the Texas Revolution. We will comparing and contrasting the lives of Sam Houston and Lorenso de Zavala. We will be having a test on the Texas Revolution on Friday. A study guide will come home tomorrow.

Math- We are beginning to learn about decimals and how decimals and fractions are related. We will be using lots of manipultatives to help us understand the concept of decimals as we apply them to real life examples.

Writing-Our rough drafts are very good so far. We will be finishing up our writing pieces this week and the kids are working very hard to make sure that their story topic is important to them and unique, that they are using good word choice and descriptive writing, and are describing the experience and telling why it is important to them. We will be working on endings and adding truism to their writing as well as editing for final publication.

We have a writing benchmark on Wednesday and probably part of Thursday. We will be completing a multiple choice section that works on combining sentences, grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation and then going through the writing process as they write to a prompt. This will include prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and writing their final copy. This test will be similar to what they will need to do independently on the TAKS test in the beginning of March. The children should work hard and be tired after the entire day of writing. I am excited to see the progress that your children have made since the benchmark at the beginning of the year!

Newsletter-January 10, 2011

Hi,

Our class has been very interested in learning about World War II and people who were impacted by the events in the war. Comparing and contrasting the von Trapp family in The Sound of Music with the REAL von Trapp family was very fun. We looked at a powerpoint with many websites about the movie and the family. It had primary as well as secondary sources. We used the research to help us draw conclusions about the real family and literary license. We also read a book about King Christian V in Denmark and the yellow star. Erika's Story was another book that we read with unexpected outcomes. Ask your child about these books and information. We will be continuing looking at literary fiction or historical fiction. We will be using literatured dealing with the topic of WWII some more to examine and research.

In writing, we are gathering ideas and details to begin our next writing piece. A kernal story was a great strategy that we used to help outline a story. (Where were you, moment it started, next moment, last moment, what I thought) This outline helped each of them decide if they have experiences as well as beliefs or reflections about the experience to make a great story. They have been asking themselves if the story is unique to them or is it predictable and has basically happened to everyone. We will begin writing our drafts tomorrow and will continue to revise and edit next week.

In math, we have been using fraction strips, fraction circles, and drawings to help us practice comparing fractions, adding fractions, and finding equivalent fractions. We will be taking a math benchmark on Wednesday and then moving onto decimals. We will relate decimals back to fractions and use decimal square models to help us gain a greater understanding of the concept. We will also be doing a lot of problem solving to apply decimals and fractions.

Last week in science, we learned about different types of soil. We tested the water retention in different soils and then planted radish seeds in the soil to determine which soil is best for growing seeds. We will be collecting data all week and making our determination on Friday.

We will be learning about the Texas Revolution. We talked about vocabulary today and watched a video on the following website. http://www.txindependence.org/ We will be practicing our reading comprehension skills by reading our textbook in SS to gain and understand information about the Texas Revolution. We will also be learning about Texas heroes and reading historical fiction or literary nonfiction on this topic.

Our pen pals are coming to FCE on Friday. We will be taking them into the computer lab and writing on our blog. We will also be exploring some fun sites in math and social studies. We are excited to see them again. Feel free to come and join us. We will be in the computer lab from 10:30-11:30.

How was your holiday break?

Write about what you did over your holiday break. Did anything interesting happen? Did anything amazing, funny, unique, tragic, exciting, sorrowful, wonderful, etc... happen? Write about it. Then read what others have written and respond. (Don't forget to write using correct language, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. U R not texting!!!!)

I can't wait to read everyone's posts.

Happy New Year!

Hi,

Happy New Year! I am so excited to be with your children tomorrow. We have many exciting things coming up!

In reading we will be learning about historical fiction using the literature about World War II. Tomorrow we will be learning about the Von Trapp family which is the family on which The Sound of Music is based. Have your kids seen The Sound of Music? In writing we will be starting new personal narratives. Talk about things that happened over the break to use as possible story ideas. What happened and what did they learn from that experience? In math we will continue working with fractions using pattern blocks, fraction circles, and fraction strips. We will apply our study of fraction concepts in problem solving situations. In science we will be reviewing conductors and insulators and then beginning to study soil. We will review our social studies test taken before the break on Early Texas and the missions. Wow! we are going to be busy!!!!!!! Expect your kids to come home tired but excited about learning!

Don't forget that our holiday reading logs are due tomorrow. Everyone was expected to read 100 min/week so at least 200 minutes should be on everyone's log. I am anxious to see who are top readers were over the holidays!

The 2nd checkpoint for your child's Science Project is due on Friday, Jan. 7.

Our pen pals are coming to visit us at FCE on Friday, January 14. We would love to have you come and be part of the visit.

Thank you for sharing your child with me. Be sure to get them to bed early tonight. We have busy days ahead!

I hope that you all have a safe and happy 2011.

Sincerely,
Pam Bartholomew
