Bartholomew Bats!

Our school is located in Round Rock, Texas which is near Austin. Austin and Round Rock both have huge populations of Mexican Free Tailed Bats that live under our bridges. A colony of bats lives beneath the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin and in Round Rock, another colony resides under the Interstate 35 bridge over McNeil Road. Each evening from March to about October, the bats fly out from beneath the bridge and search for insects to eat. The emergence of the bats is a wonder to watch. We are also thankful that all these millions of bats eat the bugs by our homes.

Our class mascot is the Bat to honor the mammals that live so close to us and help us. (also because Bat and Bartholomew both start with the letter B!) The bats in Central Texas live together in a group and help take care of the young. Then they migrate together as a team. Our class will also live together in our classroom, work together as a team, and help each other out. We are the Bartholomew Bats!

Hi,

Yay Earth Week! We had fun collecting plastic bags to recycle and reusing supplies to create artwork. There is a paired reading passage for homework this week about Trash. Fourth grade is the first time students encounter paired passages which requires higher level thinking. They need to compare, contrast, and analyze the information in the passages to show their understanding. We have been working on this and will continue. Talk about the passages and ask questions about all the things your child is reading. Continue to ask them, "why" and ask them to think about the strategies he/she is using while reading.

Kickball Tournament-The Kickball Tournament, Kids Kicking out Hunger, will be on Sunday, May 1 at Gattis Elementary. Hopefully, your child will be there playing kickball. If you don't want to play, you can come, volunteer and cheer on Forest Creek! Let me know if you have any questions. Pen Pals-We are working hard on our pen pal books. We are writing essays about our time with our pen pals. We should finish them this week.

Mindfulness-The children seem to like the Mindfulness activities that we've done so far. Next week, we will add an active learning activity such as spelling freeze tag, spelling relay, etc... and then do the mindfulness session after the physically active game. We will give feedback to the researchers about the effectiveness of mindfulness in the classroom especially paired with physical activity. They will used our feedback to write a NIH grant. You can try mindfulness at home using this free program. Go to smilingmind.com.au and sign up. The program is from Australia and the accent adds to the fun of the sessions. :) Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Read about our week:

Reading-We are continuing to review genres and discussing on test taking strategies. We are talking with partners and sharing our strategies and our thinking. Many times, the students understand the passage, but get confused by the question. We are working on thinking carefully about what the questions is really asking and checking carefully that our answer truly answers the question. We are also working in some book groups and doing lots of independent reading as well as working on I-Station on the computer. Be sure to work on I-Station at home. I-Station can count as some daily reading and recorded on reading logs also. Go to FCE website, then resources, then students, then click on I-station Math, it may then ask for our school name, type in Forest Creek Elementary, then log in using s###### (student number) password=###### (student number with no S). You may have to download I-Station onto your computer or I-pad. Once downloaded, play games and work on literacy activities everyday!

Writing-We will finish our Pen Pal stories for our pen pal book. We will also begin planning some fiction stories. We will read more mentor texts and refer back to fiction story structures to help make our stories awesome!

Social Studies- Our field trip to the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum is on Tuesday and we are very excited. Thank you to the parents who will chaperone our trip. This trip helps bring together a lot of the people, events, and concepts that we've learned this year. When we return, we will continue to research our Texas Heroes and begin working more on our projects.

Spelling-This week we will work on prefixes-un, dis, non. When added to a base word, it changes the meaning to the opposite of that base word. Test on Friday.

Vocabulary-Last week we worked on math measurement words. These were very tricky for some children. Study more, practice on quizlet, and there will be a retest on Friday of measurement words, if last week's score was below 70%. There will also be a test on Friday on this week's words.

Sign up for spring conferences, if you haven't yet. We look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child's progress. Students should attend conferences to talk about their goals and share work samples.

Hi,

We had a busy and fun week.

Carnival- Our carnival on Friday was wonderful! Thank you to our PTA for all their hard work. Thank you to Mrs. Bannister for making our amazing "Dining Out" basket and thank you also to all those who donated gift cards. Thank you to Mrs. Benedetto for helping us and donating the materials for our silent auction bat painting.Thank you to all who had fun at the carnival and supported our school. It was super!

Silent Auction-Bat Painting-The class worked hard on our bat painting. They put blue tape on the bat then painted the sections with cool colors. Then they put the blue tape on the background and painted the sections with warm colors. Then they painted the spaces between the bat sections (where the tape was) with black to make the bat stand out. Lastly, they wrote their names using silver sharpie. It took many steps, but turned out looking great. Thank you to all those who bid on it. Lucky Samantha bid on our painting and won! Yay, Sam!!!! (photo attached)

We would love to have you all come and support Forest Creek and help us kick out hunger in Round Rock and Honduras!

Pen Pals-We had a great visit on Tuesday with our Pen Pals. We decorated little pots and planted some flowers for them. We shared some of our photos and special things with them, and many of them brought some of their interesting things to share. There was lots of talking and storytelling going on in the library! We will now work on essays about our pen pals to make a book for them. Our last pen pal visit will be on Tuesday, May 17. You are welcome to continue to visit the pen pals at The Court at Round Rock on Sunrise Road. Just call first to be sure that your pen pal is available for a visit.

Garden Box-We planted some vegetables and the rest of the pen pal flowers in our class garden box. I bet the plants are enjoying all of this rain. Hopefully, they won't drown. :)

Mindfulness-We are working with a few other classes from our school and some researchers from University of Texas at Austin to try brining mindfulness into the classroom. We will use a program called Smiling Mind (smilingmind.com.au) and will listen to a short mindfulness audio each day. We will discuss our thinking and reactions to the sessions. Then beginning the week of April 25, we will add an active learning activity such as spelling freeze tag, spelling relay, etc... and then do the mindfulness session after the physically active game.

Hi,

What a wonderful day! Skyping with a 4th grade classroom in Uganda was amazing! The kids had some great questions and answered their questions well. The children in Africa sang us their national anthem and we sang ours for them. We also each sang our version of the ABC song. This school is a boarding school and they go to school 6 days a week from 7 am-4 pm then again from 7:30-8:30 pm. Their classes are taught in English at about 1st grade, which is not their native language.. It was great to learn about some ways that we are different, but more importantly how we are alike. They are kids, like us, learning, playing, and having fun. Because of our help with Libraries of Love, they are also reading a lot! Their smiles were incredible !

We also weeded and planted veggies in our garden box. Hopefully, we will have okra, eggplant, and peppers soon!

Thank you to Mrs. Benedetto for planning and donating materials for our awesome silent auction masterpiece! Be sure to come to the carnival to support our school and bid on our class art. Turn in food gift cards for our Dining Out basket from our class. Bring them to school and I will send them home with Ava, so Mrs. Bannister can create our basket. The carnival is going to be awesome!

One more week to sign up for the Kickball Tournament! $10 per child (K-5) You can sign up with a team or we will put you on a team. All kids will get a t-shirt, and we will be competing against Gattis and Blackland Prairie Elementary Schools. Help us Kick out Hunger locally and globally. All proceeds go to RR Serving Center and Friends of Los Ninos in Honduras. Kickball games will be on Sunday, May 1 at 11 am at Gattis Elem.

Empty Bowl Event on Saturday, April 9 from 11-2 at Cedar Ridge High School. Another great event to get a handmade bowl, some yummy food, and help the RR Serving Center.

Reading: We learned about Navajo Code Talkers during WWII and practiced reading, then stopping to jot notes after each section to monitor comprehension and summarize. We also practiced determining themes as we read Cheyenne Again. We will continue to work on these skills as well as explaining cause and effect, using context to figure out tricky words, and analyze characters and how they change. Text structures and author's purpose will also be practiced. We will practice these skills by reading short passages of different genres as well as reading in book club groups, and independent reading.

Writing: We continue to work on conventions in writing such as capitalization, punctuation, spelling, noun/verb agreement, and sentence structures. We are also using poetry mentor texts to write poetry and are writing creatively.

Social Studies: We are researching Texas Heroes and will present our information in a few weeks. The children need to turn in a summary, timeline, important characteristics, and reasons why he/she was influential to Texas. The kids choose how they will present-cereal box, poster, computer presentation, play, song, etc...They can dress up for their presentation. Ask your child about his/her Texas Hero.

Spelling-This week we practiced words with the Greek and Latin roots for water-hydra and aqua. Next week we will work with the Latin root-circ which means ring. (circle, circumference, etc...)

Next week, our vocabulary words will include measurement words. This week we reviewed some reading words.
