Bartholomew Bats!

Our school is located in Round Rock, Texas which is near Austin. Austin and Round Rock both have huge populations of Mexican Free Tailed Bats that live under our bridges. A colony of bats lives beneath the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin and in Round Rock, another colony resides under the Interstate 35 bridge over McNeil Road. Each evening from March to about October, the bats fly out from beneath the bridge and search for insects to eat. The emergence of the bats is a wonder to watch. We are also thankful that all these millions of bats eat the bugs by our homes.

Our class mascot is the Bat to honor the mammals that live so close to us and help us. (also because Bat and Bartholomew both start with the letter B!) The bats in Central Texas live together in a group and help take care of the young. Then they migrate together as a team. Our class will also live together in our classroom, work together as a team, and help each other out. We are the Bartholomew Bats!

Newsletter-Great Visit with Pen Pals on Tuesday, Wonder Author comes to Round Rock ISD on Monday, Science Test on Wednesday, Service Club on Monday, Reading/Math Logs due on Monday, Homework packets due on Monday

Hi,

We had a wonderful visit with our pen pals on Tuesday. We made bowls for the Empty Bowl Project and they look beautiful! Come and see them on March 1 at Cedar Ridge High School for the Empty Bowl Festival.

We will also make Valentines this week to give to the children at the Emergency Shelter at Starry.

Be sure to sign up to help with our Valentine's Day Party on Friday. Every child who chooses to share Valentines needs to bring one for each child in class. Your child can bring in a decorated box or bag to hold their valentines on Friday for the party.

Read about our week:

Reading-We are continuing reading our book club books. We read a chapter, write a summary and response to the chapter and we meet with our book club to discuss the chapter. We will also read expository articles next week and work on context clues, summarizing, and making inferences.

Writing-We are finishing revising and editing our personal narratives and will begin planning expository pieces about our pen pals.

Math-Decimals and fractions will continue to be a focus. We will also work with measurement vocabulary and playing games to practice all math concepts. Continue to work on multiplication and division at home.

Science-Weathering,erosion, and deposition and the ways that these forces change the land is our topic. We will continue learning about these concepts with vocabulary practice and some cool videos as well as a relay game and will have an assessment on Wednesday, February 12. Go to Stemscopes to practice.
