Bartholomew Bats!

Our school is located in Round Rock, Texas which is near Austin. Austin and Round Rock both have huge populations of Mexican Free Tailed Bats that live under our bridges. A colony of bats lives beneath the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin and in Round Rock, another colony resides under the Interstate 35 bridge over McNeil Road. Each evening from March to about October, the bats fly out from beneath the bridge and search for insects to eat. The emergence of the bats is a wonder to watch. We are also thankful that all these millions of bats eat the bugs by our homes.

Our class mascot is the Bat to honor the mammals that live so close to us and help us. (also because Bat and Bartholomew both start with the letter B!) The bats in Central Texas live together in a group and help take care of the young. Then they migrate together as a team. Our class will also live together in our classroom, work together as a team, and help each other out. We are the Bartholomew Bats!

Newsletter

Hi,

We had a busy and fun week.  Pajamas, Monthly Book Challenge Lunch Treat, Flashlight Reading, Halloween... and that was just on Monday!  We also had a choir concert and received our report cards!

OMS Toy Drive-Thank you to all those who donated new toys for our OMS Toy Drive. The toys will go to children at Dell Children's Hospital.  We collected 53 toys so far and our goal is 200 toys.  Our drive will continue until the end of November.

Food Drive-Our school is also participating in a food drive for the Round Rock Serving Center.  Thank you for sending in non-perishable food to help our people in our community.

TAG Parent Information Night-The TAG teachers will host an information night on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016 in the library. The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 6:30 PM and is for parents of students not currently in TAG, who are interested in learning more about the program.

Veterans Day Program

We will be having a  tribute to Veterans on the morning of November 11th.  Please invite any veterans you know to Forest Creek to have breakfast with the student(s) they know.  The cafeteria will serve cinnamon rolls, fruit and milk or juice from 7:15-7:30 a.m.  Please help us prepare for breakfast by completing this form to provide an accurate number of those eating.  There is no charge for our special guests.

We will be having two patriotic programs to honor our Veterans on November 11th - one at 8:15 a.m. for grades Kinder-2nd and another one at 9:00 a.m. for grades 3-5.  You may attend one or both.  Thank you for helping us teach our students the meaning of this holiday and why it is so important to honor those who have served our country.

Veteran’s Photo Needed
We look forward to recognizing these special men and women who have contributed so much for our country through a slideshow presentation. Please send a photo of your special Veteran to Kelly_Erickson@roundrockisd.org. Please include the Veteran’s name and unit or job title during their service. Veterans do not need to be present for our program to be included in our slideshow.

Read about our week:

Reading-Poetry paints a picture in our minds. We compared two videos made from the same poem and realized that the same words create different images for different people. Ask your child about the videos for Enter this Deserted House by Shel Silverstein. We learned the difference between free verse and lyrical poems and also used the lyrics from Katy Perry's Firework to learn about similes and metaphors. We will continue to read, analyze, and interpret poems this week.

Writing-Writing poems is great because our imaginations can soar. We went outside and used our senses to practice our descriptive writing and tried to create some similes and metaphors. We are working on writing a poem from an objects point of view and then we will go to the library and use the I-Pads with Ms. Smith to create a video with our poems. We will use an app that can make a photo of our object's mouth move as we read our poems. It's going to be so cool.

Grammar-We will work with possessives this week and comparing plurals and possessives.

Spelling-We will review all the ways to make words plural

Social Studies-We will research and work in groups to create projects in class to teach others about Texas explorers. We will focus on Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, and La Salle and will discuss the impact that these explorations had on Texas, its native people, and the world.
