Hi,
We had a wonderful visit with our pen pals on Tuesday. We made bowls for the Empty Bowl Project and they look beautiful! Come and see them on March 1 at Cedar Ridge High School for the Empty Bowl Festival.
We will also make Valentines this week to give to the children at the Emergency Shelter at Starry.
Be sure to sign up to help with our Valentine's Day Party on Friday. Every child who chooses to share Valentines needs to bring one for each child in class. Your child can bring in a decorated box or bag to hold their valentines on Friday for the party.
Read about our week:
Reading-We are continuing reading our book club books. We read a chapter, write a summary and response to the chapter and we meet with our book club to discuss the chapter. We will also read expository articles next week and work on context clues, summarizing, and making inferences.
Writing-We are finishing revising and editing our personal narratives and will begin planning expository pieces about our pen pals.
Math-Decimals and fractions will continue to be a focus. We will also work with measurement vocabulary and playing games to practice all math concepts. Continue to work on multiplication and division at home.
Science-Weathering,erosion, and deposition and the ways that these forces change the land is our topic. We will continue learning about these concepts with vocabulary practice and some cool videos as well as a relay game and will have an assessment on Wednesday, February 12. Go to Stemscopes to practice.
Dates to Remember:
Monday, February 10-Reading/Math logs and homework packets due, Word Study test, Multiplication quiz, Service Club from 2:45-3:45 pm
Wednesday, February 12-Science Assessment

A place for my students, our families, our friends, and me to comment and reflect on our lives in our classroom.
Bartholomew Bats!
Our school is located in Round Rock, Texas which is near Austin. Austin and Round Rock both have huge populations of Mexican Free Tailed Bats that live under our bridges. A colony of bats lives beneath the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin and in Round Rock, another colony resides under the Interstate 35 bridge over McNeil Road. Each evening from March to about October, the bats fly out from beneath the bridge and search for insects to eat. The emergence of the bats is a wonder to watch. We are also thankful that all these millions of bats eat the bugs by our homes.
Our class mascot is the Bat to honor the mammals that live so close to us and help us. (also because Bat and Bartholomew both start with the letter B!) The bats in Central Texas live together in a group and help take care of the young. Then they migrate together as a team. Our class will also live together in our classroom, work together as a team, and help each other out. We are the Bartholomew Bats!

Crazy Weather Week, Enjoy the Long Weekend!
Hi,
I hope everyone stayed warm and enjoyed the long weekend!
We will have our geometry test that we had planned for Friday on Monday. Don't forget to use the online games to help practice these vocabulary words and geometry concepts.
Reading: We discussed the Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka case and the desegregation of public schools this week. We read and discussed Ruby Bridges and wrote about her character traits as well as our thoughts about civil rights.
Writing: We are writing personal narratives about small moment events in our lives. While we revise we are using map pencils to show places in our draft in which we wrote about things we saw, heard, said, thought, and did. This will help us include specific details and descriptions in our writing. We are also working hard on making our conclusions strong using truisms, lessons learned, reflections, and memories. We will continue revising and editing and hope to have final copies by Friday.
Math: We are finishing up our work with geometry but will continue to review geometry concepts and vocabulary throughout the year. We will begin learning about decimals and fractional concepts.
Science: We are beginning to learn about weathering and erosion and the effects on the land.
SS: We will begin talking about missions in Texas.
Remember these dates:
Monday, Jan. 27-Reading/math logs are due, homework packet due, Service Club from 2:45-3:45pm
Tuesday, Jan. 28-Writing CBA
Wednesday, Jan. 29-Reading CBA, Group and Individual Photos
Thursday, Jan. 30-Math/Science Night from 5-7, Interviews for those entering the science fair at 2:00pm, Book Fair sales begin during Math/Science Night
Friday, Jan. 31-Word study test
Monday, Feb. 3-Book Fair until Feb. 7, Jump Rope for Heart begins

Great Visit with Pen Pals and Awesome Week!
HI,
We had a busy and wonderful week! Our pen pals came on Tuesday and we performed some reader's theaters for them as well as interviewing and playing games. We also made geometric solids using straws and twist ties, and created geometric patterns with tangrams and pattern blocks. It was a fantastic visit!
Read about our week:
Reading-We began new book club books with a civil rights theme. We also are continuing to read traditional tales-fairy tales, myths, legends, tall tales, etc...
Writing-We finished up our expository essays on our future careers and are collecting entries for personal narratives. We are using strategies to come up with ideas by thinking about strong emotions such as worried, embarrassed, hopeful, hopeless, angry, excited, etc...We list times when we experienced those emotions and then choose one for a rough draft. We also think about turning points in our lives as possible drafts. (first times/last times that we've done something or seen someone or something) We will soon choose an entry to begin revising and editing for publication.
Math-Geometry has been our focus. We learned a lot of vocabulary that has to do with 2D shapes, parallel and perpendicular lines, right, obtuse, and acute angles, and transformations such as reflections, rotations, and translations. We will continue next week with 3D shapes and area and perimeter.
Science-The silt in our experiment retained the most water. This earth material also allowed the radish seeds to sprout the most. We completed our properties of soil test on Thursday and wrote an expository essay explaining which properties we thought would be best for growth in a garden. We will continue with weathering and erosion next week.
Social Studies-We learned some more about the explorers and will begin talking about missions in Texas next week.
Dates to remember:
Friday, Jan. 17-Talent Show 6:30pm
Sat. Jan.18-Volunteer at the Round Rock Serving Center 10-11 am
Mon. Jan. 20-No School, MLK Jr. Day (Great weekend to volunteer!)
Tues. Jan. 21-Homework packets and reading/math logs due
Wed. Jan. 22-Science Projects and Checkpoint #5 due-Presentations will begin

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
I had a wonderful winter break. We traveled to Philadelphia, PA to see our family and many friends. I am excited to be back to school and ready for a great second half of fourth grade! I can't wait to see everyone on Tuesday and hear (and read) stories about their break.
Don't forget the Holiday Reading Logs are due on Tuesday! 200 minutes are required. Anyone reading over 200 minutes will get a prize. The readers with the greatest number of reading minutes get to choose their prize first. Readers with less than 200 minutes will need to go to study hall. I look forward to hearing about all the awesome books that were read!
Science Project Checkpoint #3 will be due on Thursday. Your child will bring home another copy of Checkpoint #3 on Tuesday. We will be working on a class exploration involving water retention of different types of soil. It will be fun and interesting and we will set up our data and findings like a science project board. This model will help the kids understand the components as they work on their own projects.
Read about our week:
We will be talking about goals and New Year's Resolutions and will be setting some for ourselves. We will keep a copy of our goals at home and at school and will put a copy in an envelope that will be opened on the last day of school!
We will be finishing our presentations of our Smores Biography Projects and beginning to read and analyze various traditional literature (fairy tales, tall tales, legends, myths).
We will also be writing personal narratives about our winter break and finishing our revisions and editing of our career essays. Letters to our pen pals will also be written this week.
In math, we will finish up fractions and begin geometry. Vocabulary will be a big focus for geometry. We will also continue problem solving and work on increasing our speed with multiplication and division facts.
In science, soil and the properties of soil will be our focus. In Social Studies, we will read about explorers of Texas.
Have a great day on Monday! Put your kids to sleep early on Monday night! I can't wait to see all your children's bright smiling faces on Tuesday!
Sincerely,
Pam Bartholomew

Happy Holidays! Great Party! Holiday Reading Challenge! Practice Math Facts! Workon Science Projects! Be sure to also enjoy time with family!
Happy Holidays! December 20, 2013
Thank you to Mrs. Fitch, our room mother, for planning an amazing holiday party! Thank you also to all the parents who came today to help! It was wonderful! The children made ornaments, played bingo, decorated cookies, and made holiday cards for children at Dell Children's Hospital. They also ate fruit, veggies, brownie bites, and Rice Krispy treats! Our book exchange was a lot of fun! We chose books one at a time and kids could steal or chose an unopened book. Poor Gavin got his books stolen at least 3 times! He was a great sport and still ended up with a perfect book for him. The kids had a great time with all of our celebrations today! Thank you again!
Thank you also for the wonderful presents! You are all very generous. Thank you for your support and for sharing your children with me.
We began presenting our biography projects today and will continue on Tuesday, January 7. If your child hasn't completed it yet, go to smore.com to finish up. We will begin reading folk tales and other traditional tales in January. We will be discussing character traits (protagonist and antagonist), how characters change in stories, plot with rising action, climax, and resolution, and the impact that the setting (time or place) has on the story. The children will choose a tale to retell to the class.
In writing, we will work on revising and editing our essays on what we want to be when we grow up and why and will begin writing new personal narratives. Talk about small moments that occur during our winter break. Those moments may become your child's next great piece of writing!
In math, we will continue working with fractions and begin working on geometry. Look for problem solving situations over break especially involving fractions, geometry, and multiple steps. Be sure to practice math facts over break. Remember firstinmath.com is a great resource! Your child should be quick with those multiplication and division facts.
In science, we will have fun with some soil explorations. Be sure to continue working on science projects! Check point #3 will be due on Thursday, January 9.
In social studies, we will learn more about explorers in Texas.
Don't forget to record reading minutes on our Holiday Reading Log! 200 minutes is the requirement. Read more and receive prizes!!!!!! Are you up for the challenge?
Have a wonderful holiday break. My husband, daughters, and I are traveling to Philadelphia to see our extended family. We are especially excited to meet our great niece, who is 3 months old, and see our other great niece, who just turned three! Be sure to relax, be safe, and enjoy your time together.
I will miss seeing your child but look forward to a wonderful second part of 4th grade!
Sincerely,
Pam Bartholomew

Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi, November 26, 2013
Your children did a wonderful job in the Boogie-O-Rama! Their outfits were groovy, their singing spectacular, and their dancing was awesome! Hats off to all of the children with singing or speaking parts. That can be difficult to perform in front of a lot of people. You were all amazing!
Thank you, Mrs. Dickson, for the beautiful apple pie! We tasted some last night and it tastes as wonderful as it looks. Thank you to everyone who baked or provided pies for our staff. We appreciate it a great deal!
Our school and the FCE Service Club donated 104 toys to OMS and Dell Children's Hospital! We didn't quite reach our goal but that is still A LOT of toys. Great job! The children will love them. We are having a FCE Service Club meeting on Monday, December 2 from 2:45-3:45. All 4th or 5th graders are welcome!
Don't forget that we will have a science test on Electricity, Insulators, and Conductors on Tuesday, December 3. Reading/Math log will be due on Monday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 4 is an early release day.
Encourage your students to go to Stemscopes to practice. (FCE website, For Students-right side, User Name-bartholomew, password-bats). They can also explore some fun Thanksgiving sites and videos on websites linked to our Bartholomew Bat Cave page. (FCE website, Our Staff, 4th grade, Pam Bartholomew, Bartholomew Bat Cave link on left side, social studies links, 2nd two sites listed)
There are tons of fun games and interactives linked to our Bartholomew Bat Cave website. Have fun exploring!
Have a wonderful holiday! See you on Monday!
Sincerely,
Pam Bartholomew
